In an original application filed before the National Green Tribunal (Principal Bench) against the contamination of municipal drinking water in cities across India, a Bench comprising Justice Prakash Shrivastava (Chairperson) and Dr. Afroz Ahmad (Expert Member) directed the authorities concerned in the States of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat to consider the issue raised and take appropriate remedial action.
It was asserted that the residents of Section Delta-I, Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh had complained that they were receiving discoloured, foul-smelling drinking water supplied through the municipal pipeline, resulting in various health issues. The applicant stated that similar issues were being faced by residents of Indore, Gandhinagar, Pune, and Bengaluru. It was alleged that the sewage mixed potable water resulted in water borne diseases.

By an order dated 13-01-2026, NGT had issued notice to the respondents.
In the present hearing, the applicant submitted that the condition in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat had worsened. Thus, NGT directed the authorities concerned of both these States to consider the issues raised and to take appropriate remedial action. They were also directed to submit the action taken report within four weeks.
The matter is to be listed on 09-09-2026.
